Architecture

The right focus

Software that is "good enough for now" is expensive to develop and expensive to maintain. As its life extends, its cost of living increases at an alarming rate. Eventually, it will either end up on life support or be forced to totter off to the great archive in the sky.

A sound overall structure is essential, and it must be communicated at all levels, otherwise your lithe young ballet dancer will be headed towards a premature acquaintance with their zimmer frame.

What to do about it?

Excellent software may be more expensive to develop at first, but will cost less to maintain and be far less likely to become obsolete as it ages.

To ensure that your software remains an asset, it must be:

  • based solidly on your customers' needs

  • aligned fully with your own long-term business aims

  • have a clear structure

  • be adaptable within well understood constraints

  • most importantly, be well explained for future developers

These qualities are not achieved piecemeal; they are the product of the kind of attention that is able to hold those values in mind even while your product and your company evolve.
